BMMS affects 6 out of 10 audience members. This “silent plague” is rendering a generation of movie fans helpless. Below is a step by step visual breakdown of the way most sufferers develop the syndrome.

The audience member recalls their first impressions of the movie they are considering, the preview and the The Movie Preview Critic recommendation.

Against their instincts and TMPC recommendations they go see the movie anyways

Even before entering the theater they sense the movie horribleness that lies beyond.

As they watch the movie, they feel trapped, overwhelmed and in fight or flight mode.

Physical symptoms occur: Eye irritation, itching, psychosomatic rashes break out. The audience member feels dirty, uneasy and infected.

In a panic, in a mode of sheer survival, they flee the theater. The images of another bad movie burned on their brain, their retinas aching.

Praying to God during this crisis is common. Prayer for a way out, an escape from this living nightmare.

Eventually a way out is found. The exit door offers a temporary, desperate solution. Thinking that if they leave the vicinity of the theater things will be okay, the movie goer flees.

It is quickly evident that the trauma is not a temporary feeling and on the way home anxiety and spontaneous crying may set in. In this heightened state of vulnerability and disorientation activities such as driving are extremely dangerous.

Upon returning home the urge to “wash away the feelings” will take over. Compulsive scrubbing and wiping of the body, particularly the hands and eyes may occur.

Finally, in from sheer exhaustion, BMMS overwhelms the viewer. Flashes of images from the Bad Movie storm through the mind’s eye. It is a living nightmare.

The unfortunate fact is that it was all preventable. Trusting the inborn survival instincts and double checking with TMPC can reduce BMMS by 98%.
