QUOTE THIS

H-Wood has used critic quotes on posters forever to try and motivate audiences that one extra nudge towards box office dollar commitment.

Studios usually aim for the name of a trusted, respected long-time working critic to splash at the top of a given movie’s poster. Critics welcomed the added recognition and extra cash contributing these quotes provided them...until they started selling out.

“A great summer thrill ride!” is technically a positive review, but does the critic saying that really love Transformers: Dark of the Moon? Probably not, but in a devil-grants-a-wish kind of way, words are spun so box office profit is won. And, we the audience lose, because we trusted and were betrayed.

On top of that, studios sometimes make the critic name up! John Doe never existed, but his quote telling us Battlefield Earth is the, “Can’t miss movie of the year!” gives him life in our minds.

It’s time to keep it real. Here’s the truth. Short and sweet. Before Twitter Tweets there were Poster Quotes. They mean what they say and they say what we think.
